2005-12-22 08:46:09 : Colorpicker for the color prefs page
I've added a slightly modified version of the flooble javascript color picker to the color preferences page. You'll need to make sure you have javascript enabled (and you most likely do) to use it. Just visit the color prefs page and click on the little colored box to the left of the input field and a new little window should appear with a palette to choose from will appear. Either click on the little box again to close it or pick a color. Too simple! You can of course continue to manually enter your color values if you know how or want to.

2005-11-29 09:15:14 : Spell check
For anyone using the new editor spell-check has been enabled. It isn't perfect by any means and sometimes will even get words out of order, but it's there and better than nothing. If you find that the little "ABC [check]" icon is still dimmed out then you may have to clear your browsers cache or wait a few days before it fixes itself.

2005-11-23 00:03:07 : A new entry editor
We've added the FCKeditor as a new editor for entries. You can switch between the original editor and the new editor, but you'll have to choose to use the FCKeditor. Think of it as a WYSIWYG editor similar to MS Word but for your entries. You can chose which to use by visiting the Defaults section and selecting Yes to FCKeditor. If you have any problems at all, switch back to using the original editor and report the problem ASAP.

2005-09-01 08:15:34 : CAPTCHA
We've added CAPTCHA support for two parts of the site now: New user registration and anonymous comment posting. CAPTCHA is basicly a way to tell people and computers apart by displaying an image with a word in it and requiring that the word be entered with the rest of the form. This is being done in order to head off any potential troubles with people using scripts to create users or spamming comment areas anonymously.
Since this is new here and only been tested enough to see that it works it might still have some bugs to be worked out, but we're pretty sure we've got it nailed down. Please report any problems you encounter.

2005-08-21 00:21:47 : Messengers
I've added a new option to the Messengers menu - Permissions. Now you can make your messengers displayed in your bio only available to friends, logged in users, and everyone (the default).
I also finally added an interface for the links and link categories, but that's only available to administrators, so uh... yeah.

I've finished updating the comments section to perform full threading of replies. Just had to make a couple minor changes to finish this up, actually. Now people can reply to specific replies and they'll be displayed fully threaded with proper ordering by date/time. Spiffy.

2005-02-18 10:38:49 : More syndication options
A week or so ago I added support for Atom syndication (albeit untested in a reader). This morning I've added support for one-click syndication to My Yahoo! and My MSN. Both of those require subscriptions to their services and for cookies to be enabled (for example, if you get a "redirection limit exceeded" message when trying to go to My MSN with Mozilla or Firefox, make sure you are allowing cookies for "my.msn.com").
These two new links aren't in the production site yet, but they're in the development site and are lookin' good.

I just fixed the date picker. Seems after the last major upgrade on the system I may have forgotten to reinstall the PEAR Date module. Whups. Or perhaps I accidently deleted it yesterday. But it's fixed now. Happy happy joy joy.

2005-02-11 09:36:43 : The Creative Commons License
I've added a Creative Commons license blurb at the bottom of the system-wide pages. Specifically, the Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 license which essentially says that all content is free for distribution (such as via RSS) so long as the source/author is attributed, the content is not used commercially, and no derivative works are created from the content. To go against the basis of the license requires the licensors permission as with any other common licensing.
The actual CC page states the following:
You are free:
  • to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work

Under the following conditions:
  • Attribution. You must give the original author credit.
  • Noncommercial. You may not use this work for commercial purposes.
  • No Derivative Works. You may not alter, transform, or build upon this work.

Additionally, it states:
  • For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work.
  • Any of these conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.

While there has been no incident (that I am aware of) which has caused me to slap this licening upon the site and everyones works within, I've decided to do it in order to head off any future problems. As many people believe, if there is no copyright then it is fair game for any use whatsoever. That isn't entirely true, but it is what many people feel to be true. It's a pretty sticky thing, so now we have something in place to make it clearer.
I feel that this sort of license currently best represents my desires, and hopefully those of everyone else using this site. After all, anyone can create an account and publish their works (wether they be a laundry list, rant, musings, or anything else), and anyone can view the public postings. With that in mind, Attribution is essential. And since anyone can view these works free of charge, it seems to make sense that the copying and posting of the publicly viewable works be governed by a blanket Noncommercial clause as well. Finally, it doesn't make sense that someones work here be used somewhere else with minimal changes made to it without first getting permission to do so and attributing the original work.

Not everyone will agree with this, or be in agreement with the use of this particular license. To that end, I will strive to make it so that users can select their own licensing to be placed with their own pages so as to better reflect their desires in this matter.

2004-08-06 13:27:10 : New comment system testing
The comment system is being revamped because, well, it needs it and the current incarnation is teh suq. It works, but it's lacking. So for the past few days I've come up with some spiffy new code to handle the presentation of fully reply threaded comments. Now I just need to shoehorn it in, and that's the point of this entry. Well, part of it.

2004-05-15 11:00:09 : Those pesky bugs!
Not a lot of news to report here. We did discover a bug this morning though regarding the activation process and have since fixed it. Good thing this didn't affect many people, though.
I do have a couple ideas for a major revamp of the themes for reading/listing peoples entries and bios though, so over the next couple of months I'll be hammering that out a bit. The current themes are ok and they work, but they could be better. A lot better.
One of the things I was working on a bit ago was user icons. That's pretty much in working order, but I was working on making transparent GIFs scale cleanly and that pretty much isn't easily possible. Bummer deal. So that's on hold for the time being. Same with animated GIFs, sort of, but the major limitation there is size. Ah well, I'll get around to it eventually.

Yesterday we busted some ass getting a bunch of the site converted over to being fully templatized like we said we would a while back. Well, it's happening in a hurry now. Just now this morning we've added a forgotten password recovery page to the mix - supply your email address and login and we'll supply your password in an email. Simple.

2003-12-01 09:05:55 : Asending and Desending
A friend asked about being able to change the order in which entries are displayed. So now I've added a way for users to specify in which order they want their entries to be display to the public. At some other point I'll add a way for logged in users to override that setting for viewing other peoples entries.

2003-11-21 14:11:13 : Testing a new Tag
This is an entry to test some new tags. It's terribly exciting. (If you see what looks like gibberish, it's probably because I haven't moved the code into production yet as I'm still testing/developing it for the time being.)
  • user_link
    • This should have a link to no_one's current entries: {user_link user='no_one'}. This is what is displayed when only the required var user is set.
    • And again, but with a link to the bio as well: {user_link user='no_one' with_bio='yes'}. This one has the optional var with_bio set to yes.

  • amazon
    • This should be a link to amazon.com for the movie "Versus" on DVD: {amazon asin='B000095J2Y'}. This one has the required var asin set to the ASIN of an item to link to.
    • And again, but with the text to use as the link specified: {amazon asin='B000095J2Y' name='Versus'}. This one has the optional var name set, which can be set to anything at all - it doesn't have to be the actual name of the item on Amazon.

2003-10-31 15:46:47 : minor changes
As usual I've been pretty much dormant again with development of the site, however I have made a few changes in the past few days: When logging in Securely, you will remain in Secure mode until you log out. When logged in, there are now links you can use on the side menu to switch between Secure and Insecure modes. When logging in or changing your password you are encouraged to use Secure mode. In user Bios, the last date and time a user logged in is now displayed.
Oh, and Happy Halloween.

2003-09-20 10:34:35 : Version 3.0 is online
Yep, here it is, the next major upgraded version. This is actually sort of half way to being where I wanted it for this version, but that's why version numbers can go up easily.
  • The basis of templates for List and View modes (Friends mode coming soon)
  • A javascript date picker when writing/editing an entry
  • Sessions being stored in the database which will allow us to easily add a feature for users to see who else is logged in at the same time.
  • Ability to delete ones own entries while in View mode
  • Many bug fixes
Neet stuff all around, generally.

2003-08-29 16:03:55 : Stuff
I've revamped the diary entry editor (using it right now in dev and no ill effects yet) and will be changing the template system it uses slowly over the next month or so. Although, actually, I'll more than likely finish up a few things and move all of the current changes over into production and then continue with the template system upgrades. Yee-haw.
I realize I said that I would be making these sorts of changes a couple months ago, but Life Happens and I've been busy with other things. That and there has not been any push of any kind to do the work, so back burner and all of that.
One thing I have added to the list of things to add is a password recovery thing incase you forget/lose your password. I'll probably default new users to being able to start writing their own entries right away instead of needing to be "upgraded" from Reader status to User. I'm pondering this one.

2003-07-17 13:43:31 : Long time, no updates or anything
Yesterday I started on a way to store the session IDs in the database and got that working. Today I've finished up a bit of extra code for page tracking. What all this means is that now when you login your session data is stored in the database and other users can see who else is logged in at the same time as well as what they are doing on the site. I haven't switch the site over to this new code yet as I need to finish up a couple of other little things first, but expect it in about a week or so unless something comes up.
I guess users being able to upload a thumbnail image of themselves just got bumped up in priority a little.
